SPENN 1.2.0 New stuff

👋 Hi everyone, this is a big one! We have been working for close to 3 months finalizing this release, so there is no surprise we are super excited to finally be able to publish it. The biggest change this time around is a brand new Power feature – this time with fixed fees similar to how other players in the market are operating. Anyways, keep reading 👇 for all the juicy details!

New features

  1. Fixed fee Power top up & cash out: Finally Power users have an easy way to figure their earnings potential, and, for our users, a predefined cost for cash out or top up. Not only are our fees lower than ANY of the mobile money products, but, the Power user will be earning more with us than with any other company. That is what you call a win-win 🤩!
    • Find top up & cash out locations: A simple way to see a list over the closest Power users, bank branches or Plus with Power around you. To see all the locations in the map, simply tap the “Map” button in the top right corner.

      Ambassador call to action

    • New top up and cash out flow:
      • Top up: First, add the amount you want to top up (top up is always free). Secondly, let the Power user scan the QR code. Third, the Power user will get the cash from you, then swipe to confirm the top up.
      • Cash out: First, add the amount you want to cash out (the fee is automatically added). Secondly, scan the Power users QR code. Third, swipe to confirm the transfer to the Power user. Forth, get your cash from the Power user.

      Ambassador call to action

    • Fixed fees: In every market there are now fixed fees for cash out! The fee is automatically added to the total when you go through the new Power cash out flow.

      Ambassador call to action

    • This is the FIRST iteration of this brand new Power experience, so I need YOUR feedback, both negative and positive, to make it even better through upcoming app releases!

  2. Bills pay in Zambia (Cellulant): Users in Zambia will now be able to pay bills using SPENN. To begin with the list of providers are the following:
    • ZESCO
    • DStv
    • TopStar
    • GOtv
    • Muvi TV

This list will keep increasing over the next few months 😁!

SPENN 1.1.2 New features/feature improvements

The new Android release is now live in the Google Play Store. As always, please read through the full release notes to understand what is new or has been changed.

Big improvements

  1. TZ KYC improvement: The new NIDA implementation has now been added. This will yet again enable us to use the digital NIDA verification when users are validating using their National ID. This new addition will add a slight change to the validation flow:
    1. Select ID
    2. IF Voters ID or Passport is selected, the rest of the fields (normal flow: selfie, ID, nationality etc.) will appear.
    3. IF National ID is selected, the user will be requested to answer a series of questions (up to 5 questions). As soon as the gives two correct answers, the rest of the fields (normal flow: selfie, ID, nationality etc.) will appear.

Important information: Due to some issues with the NIDA system, answers for question 5 will automatically be “wrong”, even though it has been answered correctly. We are expecting this to be solved by the third party in the very near future. It will not be an issue as long as the user answers correctly on 2 of the 4 first questions.

  2. Improved design for business QR print. After the update, the QR poster printed from the app is more aligned with the QR posters our STMs are handing out/installing on location.
    New QR print design:
  3. Updated layout and flow of the app menu (appears when tapping the menu button in the top right corner). The menu has been restructured so that related items have been grouped together in sub-menus (for instance, all options related to customer services are under “Customer service” etc). The user will also find a series of short How to videos under the “How to use SPENN” sub menu.
  4. SPENN Plus users are now able to add additional information about the location of their store (optional address field). An example being a SPENN Plus user located within a shopping center now are able to add information about the floor and shop number of his store.

Technical & Architectural Updates, and bug fixes

  1. Integrated the new Google place SDK.
  2. A bunch of new Airship events have been added for improved user tracking and automation.
  3. Improvement of Airship events naming for better consistency.
  4. Various bug fixes.

SPENN 1.0.12 New features/feature improvements

👋 The October update is all about SPENN+ and the SPENN map, see underneath for all changes and improvements.

SPENN+ updates and improvements

  1. Filter SPENN+ categories in the map. When selecting a category, all other categories will be removed from the map to make it easier to locate a specific type of business.
  2. Improved map performance by having the user click Redo search here after panning (swiping around on the map), instead of the map searching the map after every pan (swipe).
  3. The maps default location will now be within the account-holder’s country rather than in the middle of the globe. For instance, a Kenyan user will see Kenya when Map is clicked (before the GPS takes you to your present location).
  4. When tapping a SPENN+ location, the user can now see more details by tapping the “up-arrow”. This includes a description and a photo.
  5. SPENN+ now supports description and photo. Both are mandatory to help reduce the number of “fake/non-active businesses” added to the map.
  6. SPENN+ location can only be placed within the account-holder’s country, trying to add the location outside of your country will give you an error message.
  7. SPENN+ profile UI has been improved and is now more consistent with the personal SPENN profile UI.
  8. The QR scanner is now universal and with an improved UI.
  9. The sales QR code can “tap to enlarge” similar to how you can tap to enlarge personal and SPENN+ QR code (QR codes found under the Me tab).
  10. Improved UX after a QR has been scanned if the user has bad internet connectivity.

General improvements

  1. The about section (?) has gotten a new icon to make the “About menu” more apparent for the user. The user can now log out from the “About menu”, as well as rate the app.
  2. After a user has completed three successful transactions a review our app popup will appear. If the user rates ⭐ or ⭐⭐ stars, a call to action to give us feedback as to why they rated us badly is presented to the user. If they rate us ⭐⭐⭐⭐ or ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars, a call to action to rate us in Google Play Store is presented to the user. Overall this should grant the product team another feedback channel, as well as increase the review frequency on our app page (which is good for ASO).

Technical & Architectural Updates, and bug fixes

  1. Double load issue when starting the app has been solved.
  2. Various bug fixes.
  3. Various UI fixes.
  4. Various performance improvements.

SPENN 1.0.11 New features/feature improvements

Airtime will be switched on in Rwanda on 👉Thursday 13.09.2018👈 – new markets will be added in the near future. IMPORTANT: The app does not support Android 4.2 anymore, users now need version 4.3 or newer. This change had to be made to fix a few potential security issues – and there was no way around it unfortunately.

New feature

  1. Send money to non-SPENN users: Transfer money to any phone number (from your contact list, or numbers you manually add). If select a number that is not currently linked to a SPENN account, you will get a popup informing you that this is a “Send to a new SPENN user – Your money will arrive in an instant, and CONTACT-NAME/PHONE NUMBER will be notified over SMS. The money will be returned in 3 days if not accepted.”

General improvements

  1. Recover Security Code improvement 1: A “Forgot?” button has been added on the screen where you input the Security Code. Clicking this button will open a popup telling you to contact the support team.
  2. Recover Security Code improvement 2: When the user logs in with the temporary security code, he is welcomed by the new permanent security code (like today), but he would not need to login again with this new permanent security code to complete the recovery process. In other words, after logging in with the temp code, his account will be recovered and there is no need to add the new permanent code during the next login (like today).
  3. The business QR code can be enlarged similar to the personal QR code.
  4. Auto retrieve and fill the verification code on the received over SMS has been further improved.
  5. Loader will appear after scanning a QR code. In most cases this won’t be noticeable, but during instances where the user has a slow Internet connection, it will greatly improve the user experience.
  6. Better messages when IPRS/NIDA fails to validate – enabling the user to distinguish between service unavailability and wrong information during submission.
  7. After a sale has been completed, the seller will see the buyers name in the confirmation popup.
  8. IPRS: Added a popup warning users about consequences of using FAKE IDs during account validation (in a nice way). The popup will appear when clicking the green check-mark button after adding the KYC details. The popup will force the users to click a “I understand the consequences” check-mark box before being able to continue with the account validation.

Technical & Architectural Updates, and bug fixes

  1. Significant performance improvements, especially for lower end phones, by the use of architecture component and background thread (you do not need to know what that means…😳).
  2. Various Android 8 issues has been solved.
  3. Various bug fixes.
  4. Various UI fixes (for instance improvements on the new reward model UI).
  5. Various performance improvements.

SPENN 1.0.10 New features/feature improvements

Airtime is switched off for the time being, but will be made available in the near future. IMPORTANT: The app does not support Android 4.2 anymore, users now need version 4.3 or newer. This change had to be made to fix a few potential security issues – and there was no way around it unfortunately.

New functionality

  1. Users are now able to buy airtime with SPENN. Load can be bought for your own phone number, or most pre-paid phone numbers from your contact list. In total SPENN supports the users to buy airtime/load to phone numbers from over 130 countries globally!
  2. Businesses now has their own QR code that users with ease can scan to pay in the store. The business QR code works in the same manner as the personal QR code, meaning it can be used over and over again, and not linked to one specific sale.
  3. Business QR code can be exported to be printed. It will be exported in a photo format and include business name, SPENN logo, and SPENN accepted here. Adding this printed QR code to the business, will enable users to quickly pay by scanning the printed QR code.
  4. Ambassador 2.0: Introduced a new reward model which will take over for the old Ambassador model. The improvements have been developed to increase the return of investment of costs associated with the ambassador model. In v1.0 we allowed users to invite friends and family and get a “finders fee” for doing so. This model generated a lot of exposure and new users, but at the same time had some drawbacks. The biggest one being a lack of education/understanding of the potential found in SPENN – which led to less usage than expected. With the new model, we are adding a set of challenges available to new users. For each completed challenge, the user will receive a portion of the total ambassador reward. We are thereby incentivizing the user to educate themselves on how to use SPENN. The model works both ways, where both the new user and the ambassador will get a portion of the reward for each completed challenge (the model is however full customizable; for instance could we make it so the new user has to do all challenges to receive the full reward, while the ambassador will get the reward after the user has done 2 of the challenges). Example challenges:
    • Verify/validate account
    • Make your first transfer
    • Complete 5 transfers
    • Pay in a store
    • Make a request

See the new reward model here: NEW AMBASSADOR MODEL PROTOTYPE

General improvements

  1. Weak PIN protection during account creation. Now we do not allow users to choose PIN codes like 123456 – trying to do so will show an error code.
  2. Added a popup warning users about consequences of using FAKE IDs during account validation (in a nice way). The popup will appear when clicking the green check-mark button after adding the KYC details. The popup will force the users to click a “I understand the consequences” check-mark box before being able to continue with the account validation.
  3. Popup informing users that there is a new version of the SPENN app available. The popup will appear shortly after launching the app.
  4. Changing your country requires a mandatory phone number change, meaning you cannot change your country without adding a new local phone number.

Technical & Architectural Updates, and bug fixes

  1. Improved segmentation possibilities in Urban Airship for more efficient targeting with in-app messages and push notifications. The following tags has been added:
    • Country
    • Currency
    • Bank
    • Plus
    • Plus Category
    • Power enabled
    • Power user
    • Non-validated/verified
    • Plus Activated
    • Plus Deactivated
    • Verified
    • Validated
  2. Rooted environment detection and preventing the app from running at most rooted devices, as well as android emulators
  3. Bug fix: Preventing user from submitting same KYC request multiple times
  4. Bug fix: in detecting invalid phone number at user registration
  5. Various app improvements, bug fixes and architecial updates

SPENN 1.0.9 New features/feature improvements

IMPORTANT: The app does not support Android 4.2 anymore, users now need version 4.3 or newer. This change had to be made to fix a few potential security issues – and there was no way around it unfortunately.

Improvements on the onboarding experience

  1. The app now more efficiently guides the user through phone verification and account validation by gently forcing the user to complete the necessary steps to be able to fully utilize SPENN in their respective markets. The user will be reminded about phone verification/account validation upon every login by a popup. The user will also be reminded through a popup if the following buttons/fields are clicked: AMOUNT field, ADD RECIPIENT field, REQUEST button, SHOPPING CART tab, TOP-UP button, CASH-OUT button, or UPGRADE TO SPENN+. See new onboarding popup flow here: NEW FLOW.
  2. After phone verification, Rwandan and Kenyan users will be guided to the KYC flow.
  3. The app now has a loader (from 0-100%) upon launch, both to improve the experience for low-end devices, and the experience with bad internet connectivity.
  4. The app-view that appears after PIN codes has been matched during the account creation, has now been optimized to further improve the user experience when this process is taking longer than usual (when the user has bad internet connectivity).

General improvements

  1. Searching for phone numbers has been improved (the speed), as well as a new loaded has been added to improve the experience when the user has a bad internet connection.
  2. Reward related messages (invite SMS, Invite button, ambassador text) are country specific.
  3. Improved performance for low-end devices.
  4. Various small UI and UX improvements: QR scan area has been increased, KYC UI for RW and KE is fixed, relocate funds UI has been improved, business sale item UI is improved.
  5. Improved error messages (still ongoing).
  6. Various error & bug fixes

SPENN 1.0.8 [Update] Improvements

IMPORTANT: The app does not support Android 4.2 anymore, users now need version 4.3 or newer. This change had to be made to fix a few potential security issues – and there was no way around it unfortunately.

This is not a normal update, and does not include any new functionality, however, it does include two important fixes necessary for the upcoming Rwanda launch – so please read carefully.

What is fixed:

  1. Rwanda only got street signs and addresses a few years ago, which actually means its not used very frequently yet. And most addresses are not available in Google Maps (in the cities outside of Kigali). Therefore a fix has been implemented to improve the map accuracy for businesses. The pin will stay where the business drops it, instead of moving to the closest address, which in Rwanda actually could be Googles default location for the city. The address field will be populated with the closest address (which for Rwanda in many instances will be the city name, or an “unnamed road”), even though the map pin will stay where it was dropped by the business owner. @antonio this will also solve some of the issues you have faced in the Philippines.
  2. When clicking Top-up and Cash-out from My money, the map will also include SPENN Partners (as well as Power users and Power enabled SPENN+ users).

Just to clarify, the difference between clicking directly on the Map tab, and clicking on the top-up or cash-out button, is that the latter actually filters away all businesses that does not offer cash-out and top-up. So using the top-up and cash-out buttons makes it easier to locate these services than looking directly in the map.

SPENN 1.0.8 New features/feature improvements

IMPORTANT: The app does not support Android 4.2 anymore, users now need version 4.3 or newer. This change had to be made to fix a few potential security issues – and there was no way around it unfortunately.

Improvements on the reward model

  1. There has been added some extra space between the green “Take me to my account” button, and the slider where you have to tap to add your reward code. This will reduce the amount of users that click the green button by accident, when they intended to add their reward code.
  2. If a user forgot to add the reward code during the initial registration, this can now also be done from “Edit profile” (Me → Edit profile → Promo code). HOWEVER, the user can ONLY add a reward code BEFORE phone verification. If the phone number has been verified, the user will not be able to add a reward code (they will get an error code).

Improvements on SPENN+

  1. When upgrading your account, you will now be prompted with a popup explaining what SPENN+ entails, to make sure you want to upgrade. To close down the popup, the user has to click on a checkmark box (similar to the Security Code popup). This is meant as a tiny barrier, to minimize the amount of stores created because the user was not aware what he was doing.
  2. The user can now activate and deactivate their accounts from the edit SPENN+ view/screen. If SPENN+ is deactivated, it will hide them from the map, as well as make the POS unusable. The POS tab is still visible, but if the user clicks it, they are prompted with a popup explaining that this feature is not available unless they activate SPENN+ again (they can click Activate from the popup).
  3. SPENN+ can now store up to 20 different items, so if a business owner uses the POS with items, the 20 last items will be available in the list, rather than just the 5 last.

Rwanda specific

RWF has been changed to FRW after input from the bank partner.
